Glamping with the Shooting Sisters!

alternative wedding photography shooting sisters
Sometime around New Year I was sitting in my lounge, idly surfing some Facebook groups, feeling like this year was the year I really wanted to take my business forward to new heights, when I spotted a post by Jo Garlike from Summerlove Photography saying something like: wouldn’t it be nice to be part of an all-female photography group and would anyone be interested in being part of such a group? Like a flash I quickly typed: yes, please!!! I’d often thought how wonderful it would be to share my journey and get support, ask questions and generally just chat to people who understood, a bit like the From Our Hearts girls who are amazing and a huge source of inspiration to me. I mean, photography isn’t like a normal job where you can turn around to your boss or colleagues and ask what to do….. And so, very quickly, the Shooting Sisters were born: a group of 26 girls, all obsessed by photography, most in similar stages in their photography journey, all eager to share, inspire and help. Our Facebook group is somewhere I can comfortably ask any photography-related question without feeling silly, give and receive advice, share my life’s ups and downs and gain wonderful opportunities like second shoot to broaden my experience and knowledge.

A couple of weeks ago most of us met in a chilly tent one Friday night at Featherdown Farm nr Littleworth to begin a weekend of photography adventures, girly gossip and wine-drinking. We also had a teen shoot organised by the lovely Heidi Vietz on the Saturday morning and the lovely Kate Hopewell-Smith came along in the afternoon to give a very insightful talk on business and branding.

Here are some of my images from this fantastic weekend….

Please check out my amazing fellow Sisters’ posts for some ace photos including some fab group shots. I’ll be adding more links too…

366 Project – 10th September – 7th October

alternative-wedding-photography-366-0810

As I’ve been super busy these past few weeks, I thought I’d just do a long catch-up post to get me up to date on my 366 project. I can’t believe I’m three-quarters of the way through it! I’ve learnt so much about myself and my photography, it’s been a brilliant photography experience.

Key moments from this month were my birthday, which was so lovely – I had a fab time with friends, Barney and my gorgeous Harry. Second shooting for the awesome Joanna Brown was very special to me. I’ve been admiring her work for ages and to meet her in the flesh and see how she works was so exciting and fascinating. And finally, the Shooting Sisters, an all-female group of photographers which I have the privilege to be a part of went glamping in Oxfordshire for the weekend. Lots of wine, skill sharing, geeky photography talk, giggling and of course, lots of picture-taking happened, I’ll be blogging about our fab weekend away very soon… in the meantime here are 366 pictures from the last 3 weeks…

Coombe Lodge – Wedding Photography – Hannah & Dan

Coombe Lodge Wedding Photography 1bHannah and Dan got married at St Andrew’s Church in the gorgeous village of Blagdon in August. After the ceremony, they nipped outside for a few shots of just the two of them before heading back inside to have their son, Max, Christened. I can’t believe what a little star Max was, he was such a laid back dude and not phased at all by what was happening. Then Hannah and Dan jumped into one of the cool Minis and headed off to Coombe Lodge for their reception. Coombe Lodge is a beautiful venue. I’d popped in the day before, as it’s quite close to me, to take a look and the grounds are stunning and I saw so many opportunities for some beautiful pics! Unfortunately, the weather forecast on the day looked a bit grim, with rain forecast nearly every hour, so I braced myself for the worst. But, on the day, we got lucky and the rain held off until the late afternoon, giving me just enough time to capture some formals and whisk them off for their couple shoot.

The speeches were both hilarious and moving, and as usual, I had to really focus and concentrate on what I was doing in between stifling some giggles and trying not to shed a few tears at the end.

To round off the evening they’d booked the Bristol-based funky Dan T’s Inferno band and had a cool photo booth for the guests. It’s always fun watching the guests loosen up and get excited about dressing up.

Thanks for having me along guys, it was a beautiful day x

366 project – 3rd – 9th September 2012

alternative wedding photography 366 1909
This week was a big week – Harry started pre-school. He already does a few hours at nursery each week but this felt like more of a leap, maybe because it’s got the word ‘school’ in there, it just seemed like the next step towards growing up and eventually flying away! I suppose it was also the next step towards me getting more time to grow my little business and get back a bit more of the old me…. the change feels liberating but also sad at the same time.

I’ve snuck in an extra one this week in my round up. The one of Harry looking back. I don’t know why I didn’t choose it for my daily photo, I think I thought it was a bit too snap shotty… but it got loads of likes on Facebook, and I remember that, as soon as I took it, looking at the back of the camera thinking: this is a beautiful photo, the light is gorgeous. So it just goes to show, it’s not always the technically perfect photos are the best ones…

366 project – August 27th – September 2nd 2012

London Wedding Photography 1c
What a lovely week I’ve had. It was our wedding anniversary last week. 5 amazing years. Sometimes it’s easy to feel stuck and like life isn’t moving forward quick enough, but when I think of what we’ve achieved in those years. From getting married in the most beautiful place, Cortona, Italy – oh, I so want to go back one day and photograph that place. If anyone is getting married in Italy, please please get in touch! That would be my dream to do a wedding out there 🙂 Having our beautiful boy, Harrison, moving from London to Bristol (wow, that was a biggie), buying our house, setting up my wedding photography business, Barney changing jobs, making new friends and a new life. So the photograph is of us and our wedding cake. Now, that was an amazing wedding cake. After 5 delicious courses of our wedding feast, I could barely eat anything else and then the cake came….. gorgeous mille feuille cake. I remember wishing I could eat more. Also this week I photographed two amazing weddings. Hannah and Dan got married at Coombe Lodge, a stunning venue just on the outskirts of Bristol. And Martin and Lawrence’s magical, musical feast of a civil partnership in London on Sunday. Cannot wait to share those with you….

366 Project round up – 20th – 26th August 2012

Weekly round up of my 366 images… I think the one of Harry on his scooter is one of my favourites so far. I like the composition, his cheeky face and the light feel it has. I also really like the pink flower image, the way it forms a pattern and the colours. I’m a real fan of colour. Even when I try and hold back and go for a muted look, I find myself being drawn to making colours great colours stand out.
