South Wales – Wedding Photography – Hannah & Ben …

wedding Photography 80 - South Wales Beach Wedding

I’m so so excited to share this wedding as it was such an amazing experience and I loved every minute of it… tractor rides, beach, sea views.. aaahhh…  I’d spent the week before checking the weather every day willing that sun to pop up because I knew this wedding would be extra special if it did, and you know how rubbish this summer has been, but hooray, it did and it was beautiful!

On the day, I met Ben and the boys at the pub where a 1940s tractor, owned by one of Ben’s friend’s parents, picked them up to take them to St Elidyr’s Church in Amroth.  The service was lovely – Hannah’s friend Laury sang Ave Maria and Your Song during the signing of the register and Ben’s sister Ffion played Hallelujah on the clarinet as they walked out of the church.  Then Hannah and Ben jumped on the back of the tractor, poured a glass of champagne and we headed off to the beach for some couple portraits.  I love this part of a wedding, the couple get some time alone to enjoy their newly married status and I love to create some gorgeous images using the scenery.

Afterwards, we headed to Ben’s mum’s and her partner’s house for the reception in their gorgeous garden from which you could see the sea!  Hannah and Ben’s idea was to have a picnic theme for the reception – food hampers were delivered to each table which were filled with yummy ham, cheese, bread, chutney and pork pies and one person on each table was chosen to carve the meat for everybody.   The cake was a delicious chocolate cake made by Ben’s nan – a family favourite apparently so they asked her to make a big version!  And the favours were herbs made from seeds from Hannah’s grandad’s greenhouse.  I love the way so many friends and family helped out at this wedding.  On the day everyone was so friendly and helpful, I felt very lucky and honoured to be part of it.  Here are some of my favourite images from the day…

Camping holiday…

Last week we ignored the weather forecasts, borrowed some camping gear and headed with Barney’s 2 sisters and families to Greenacres campsite near Wells. It was a much-needed change of scenery for me as I’ve had so much to do recently as I’ve got busier, trying to cram it all in around Harry and still keep up with the 366, so it was nice to have an excuse to get away. Also, since we moved from London we haven’t done enough exploring of the local area so it was great to see more of this beautiful part of the country – I must confess, I did have a quick peek on Rightmove when I got back to check out the house prices in some of the cute villages we drove though…. 😉

Yes, it rained a bit and we did get wet and mucky (Barney confessed there wasn’t much changing of clothes going on during our 4-night stay) and Harry was a bit poorly for some of it, but I do love being out in the open, surrounded by greenery and trees. I think my favourite bit about camping is when you get back to base after a day out, get dinner on, the sun is going down and the kids are still happily playing as you sit down with a nice glass of cider in your hand.

One thing I did learn for future camping trips is invest in equipment! We’ll be making sure we’re equipped for a proper English camping trip like some of the other campers we saw – huge tents, gazebos, tents solely for kitchen equipment, bunting and fairy lights on the tents.

I can highly recommend Greenacres. It’s nice and clean, good facilities, nice play area and have an activity tent which runs a few days a week. Plus you are close to Glastonbury and Cheddar for days out, and we even popped to Weston-super-mare for the day.

Here’s some of my images from the trip… (I also took my holga so I’m looking forward to get those images developed)

Cornwall Wedding Photography – Claire & Edd

At the beginning of the month I had the absolute pleasure of second shooting with Alexa from Alexa Loy Photography. Second shooting is always an amazing opportunity in terms of gaining experience and learning new things and when it’s with someone who inspires you and you enjoy spending time with, it’s an added bonus! We had a fab time together and I’m so grateful for the opportunity, thank you Alexa!

Not only was it great to work with Alexa, but Claire and Edd’s wedding in Launceston, Cornwall just rocked. It was wet for most of the day before the sun came out late evening but they didn’t care. They smiled all day and were so laid back. Their yellow theme made the day sunny – Edd sporting some very cool yellow Hunter wellies, and pretty much all of the guests were prepared with wellies and umbrellas. After the service they treated the guests to a steam train ride with lots of champagne before heading towards Claire’s family’s house for a reception inside a huge tipi in their back garden.

Here are some of my favourite images from the day…

366 weekly round up 6th – 12th August 2012

Here’s some images from my 366 project.. highlights of the week was eating lots of yummy cake for a charity cake morning my friend Sarah organised in aid of the Macmillan Cancers Trust and going up to the Downs to watch the balloon evening ascent at the annual Bristol balloon fiesta.

Home

Just over 2 years ago we moved from London to Bristol. We chose Bristol primarily because my mum had moved here a couple of years before, and, with a small child, a bit of help is invaluable, when faced with sleepless nights and the general need for a bit of a break occasionally! I was nervous about the move, having never been to Bristol before, and waving goodbye to familiar territories – I’d lived in London my whole life! – but we swapped a one-bedroom flat for the luxury of a 3-bedroomed house. That first year was HAAAARRRRD. People said it takes 6 months to settle in to a completely new place, but in all honestly, it took longer. It felt weird starting all over, trying to make friends, and I’d often walk to the park wondering: where is everybody? Having been used to the hustle and bustle of London. The move also coincided with Harry deciding to have a difficult phase of pushing, biting – normal stuff when it comes to toddlers unable to communicate properly, but it hit me hard as I tried to meet new people and make new friends for Harry. But slowly and surely I started to create a new circle of friends and for the last 6 months or so I can really say, I now have a group of fab friends who I can fire out a text to in the morning: what you up to today? I can go out for girly drinks, we have invites as a couple to chill out with other couples, with the kids, go to BBQs and now, when we go away for visits at the weekend, I return in the car thinking: yeah, it’s good to go home….

The whole ‘starting again’ experience made me realise, it doesn’t matter where you are, how much money you have, how big your house, but if you’ve got friends, that’s what makes you feel like you’re really living…:-)

Recently, Harry got invited to his little friend Archie’s 2nd birthday party and after we headed up to a local street party – here’s some images from the day…

366 Weekly Round-up 23rd – 29th July 2012

Looking back at these images I notice it was really hot…. what happened there? This week we had an end-of-term party at my local playgroup where the kids had lots of fun chasing bubbles. I must admit, I have a bit of a thing for those bubble wands, I find it strangely therapeutic waving them around. We visited my old uni friend in Lichfield where I snapped her cute little son, Joe, and saw some piglets at a local show while we were up there. Finally, we managed to squeeze in another BBQ before the weather turned – Barney makes the most amazing burgers, they were sooooo good.

Emma Case Workshop – Custard Factory Birmingham

A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to attend a workshop by one of my favourite photographers, Emma Case. I first came across Emma whilst doing an Aspire photography and business course. As soon as I saw her work it was love at first sight. I was fairly new to the photography industry then. I knew I loved taking photos, I had this burning but scary desire to turn it into a business and was spending all my spare time poring over photography how-to websites, looking through flickr at all the amazing images, learning about editing techniques and understanding my equipment and suddenly realising that I just had to have that £1,500 prime lens! When I looked through one of her sample wedding albums on the course I was blown away by, not only the beauty of her work, but by the honesty and realness. Emma makes the everyday things in life beautiful, and through that we see what life and love is all about. In her weddings, she captures those small, simple details – granny’s old tea cups, silently gathering dust on the top shelf, the leftover dishes and champagne glasses from the morning’s breakfast, the look in dad’s eyes as he sits quietly waiting for his daughter to finish getting ready or the fleeting squeeze of a hand – simple, beautiful things on an extraordinary day. That’s what I love about her work so much, and that’s what I hope to show in my work, as well as all the fun and joy and love.

Aaaaanyway… back to the workshop. So one May morning I got up at silly o’clock and headed off to the Custard Factory in Birmingham, along with 9 other excited peeps to spend the day with Emma, Pete and Shutterbox Films and talk photography, being creative, staying true to yourself, being inspired, our businesses and generally “shoot the shit out of stuff” as Emma put it! It was an incredible day. I met some amazing people. Emma was, well, just a lovely, down-to-earth person, just as she comes across on her blog. I felt part of something that felt right and I realised I AM on the right track, even if I do sometimes have to pinch myself because I can’t quite believe I’m doing something I absolutely love. Nothing beats that feeling of people seeing my images of something or someone they love and loving them. Nothing.

I’ll never forget that day and what it gave me… oh, and if spending time with Emma, Pete and 9 other photography-obsessed people wasn’t enough, we got to shoot the most gorgeous, yummy couple whose wedding Emma will be shooting later this year. Here’s some of my images from the day…

Bristol wedding photography – Shelley & Craig

Last month I got to assist for the lovely Kathryn Edwards from Kathryn Edwards Photography. I really enjoyed shooting this wedding. There was a great sense of fun from start to finish, which I loved. The reception was held at The Paintworks, a fab venue in Bristol’s Creative Quarter just off the Bath Road. Thanks to Kathryn for having me along and here are some of my favourite images from the day…
